About the Festival

Edinburgh, the festival capital of the world, will be hosting ‘Retina – Scottish International Photography Festival’ in July 2015 at some of the most unique and striking venues across the city. Retina is an exciting opportunity to celebrate not only the best in the world of photography, but also the amazing emerging talent that Scotland has to offer.

Retina 14 saw two of the industry’s most celebrated professionals, famous fashion and celebrity photographer Rankin and international fashion model and photographer, Helena Christensen launch the event at the wonderful Assembly Rooms Ballroom. We were also able to showcase some of the best UK and international press photography from the world of news, royalty, sport, business, fashion and entertainment from the UK Picture Editors’ Guild Awards at the City Chambers with the support of the City of Edinburgh Council. Our emerging talent was represented by award winning Edinburgh College and we look forward to diversifying our representation from colleges and talent across Scotland this year.

The organisers of Retina are determined to hear the views of the industry and see what would make the best possible festival line up for 2016 and also to engage with a wide range of businesses, creative and stakeholders so that the success of the festival is secure for future years. Dates and venues are being finalised and we have a number of exciting and inspirational professionals to showcase as well as more emerging and new talent and the opportunity for a Retina Fringe is taking shape! More to follow soon!

We also wish to thank all our supporters in getting the pre-launch year off the ground and their continuing support of our ambition for this exciting event in 2015.

Roddy McRae, Chairman of Retina, said: “Retina is an original and exciting opportunity to celebrate not only the best in the world of photography but also the amazing emerging talent that Edinburgh has to offer. In this part of the world we support the development of some of the UK’s most exciting talent in photography and Retina is all about getting this talent out there and known.”

Martin Mutch, co-founder of Retina, and entrepreneur said: “Spurred on by the success and support of Retina 14, we hope we are on the path to creating an important festival on the international photographic stage. The festival is still in its inception, however we’re really excited about the support we have received, the professionals who shared our vision, worked with us and wanted to exhibit and we look forward to continuing support so that we can grow into a truly inclusive festival, showcasing the very best in future years.”

“The world’s first colour photograph was made in Scotland in 1861 by James Clerk Maxwell so it’s great to be bringing photography back home in the form of the Retina festival.” Alan McEwan- Director of Photography.

Retina’s aim is to inspire the public, elevate our understanding of photography, to be inclusive and to be enduring.
