About the Festival

Retina Scottish International Photography Festival celebrates the very best of photography. It is an inclusive festival which aims to encourage more people to take an active interest in the art form and to be inspired by a varied range of different types of photography, that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to see. Each year Retina presents a programme of high quality exhibitions, which are always free to attend. Edinburgh, the festival capital of the world, will again be hosting Retina Festival in June and July 2017, at venues across the city.

Retina is now in its 4th year and is going from strength to strength, with record engagement and attendance in 2016. Since our inception in 2014, Retina has presented work by some of the industry's most celebrated professionals, including Rankin, Dougie Wallace and Tim Flach. We are committed to presenting a broad range of genres and approaches to photography. Our exhibitions have incorporated everything from Victorian tintypes to high-end fashion editorials; from images made by fleeing refugees on disposable cameras to polished advertising photography; from vivid, arresting street photography to more contemplative studies of nature.

Retina also offers a platform from which to discover exciting emerging photographers from both Scotland and abroad. We are committed to providing opportunities for new talent to showcase their work alongside some of the greatest names in the industry.

RETINA 2017

We are delighted to announce Hellen Van Meene as our headliner for Retina 2017. She will exhibit a selection of work from her book 'The Years Shall Run Like Rabbits' at Summerhall. Also exhibiting at Summerhall will be Bryn Griffiths, with work from his project about Chernobyl, shot for Hasselblad.

Retina is also introducing a series of talks, workshops and portfolio reviews this year, to facilitate conversation about photography and elevate our understanding of this ever-changing medium. We will again be running a Photomarathon, giving entrants the opportunity to have their photographs exhibited as part of the festival.

Last year we partnered with the Association of Photographers to present an exhibition of award-winning work from their members and we are delighted that they will return for Retina 2017. We are also very pleased to host the Royal Photographic Society's International Print Exhibition for the first time. Both exhibitions include photographs from a broad range of genres, providing something for every photography fan.

There will also be an exhibition of 10 Emerging Talent photographers, who will present 10 distinct styles and approaches to photography. We selected their work from over 140 entries from around the world.

We are excited to partner with Shutter Hub for the first time this year, hosting their OPEN exhibition and working with them to provide a portfolio review day for photographers who are developing their craft to receive feedback from experienced industry professionals.

We wish to thank all of our supporters for their continuing support of our ambition for Retina to develop and broaden its scope and reach.
